DRC Technologies Top 5 Questions We Get About Performance

Is your computer suddenly being a drag?

Does your PC sometimes run a muck with your time?  Is it being a laggy saggy slow potato of a computer?  At DRC Technologies, we understand how frustrating this can be.  This can grind your productivity and grind your gears while at it. Quite the multitasker.  As PC experts, we’ve received plenty of questions regarding PC performance.  Fear not! We’ve got some answers.  Check out our new blog for a few solutions to address your slow speeds should they occur.

5. Do I really need to run regular maintenance?

Yes, absolutely! Just like a car, your computer benefits from regular tune-ups and maintenance to keep it running efficiently and extending its lifespan.

  • The latest and greatest: Keep your operating system, applications, and antivirus software updated.
  • Even PCs have allergies: Periodically clean out dust from your computer’s vents and internal components to allow proper airflow, preventing overheating.
  • Empty the bowels: Periodically clear out temporary files, and to optimize your hard drive, perform disk defragmentation. (SSDs do not need defragmentation).
  • Eh, what’s up Doc?: Regular malware/antivirus scans protect your system from malicious threats.
  • Two is one and one is none: While not directly performance-related, regular backups are crucial to protect your valuable data in case of hardware failure. When it comes to backups, in IT we say ‘two is one and one is none.’

Our Tip: Schedule a monthly or quarterly check-up for your computer. A little preventative maintenance goes a long way in preventing major headaches down the road. If you need a backup drive, we’ve got those too.

4. My computer’s making strange noises – what does that mean?

Unusual noises are often a red flag that something is amiss internally. If you hear:

  • Clicking or grinding from an HDD: This is a strong indicator of a failing hard drive. If you hear this, back up your data immediately!
  • Loud fan noise: This often means your computer is overheating or overworked. It could be due to dust buildup restricting airflow, a failing fan, or a CPU working too hard.
  • Beeping sounds: These can be diagnostic codes from your motherboard, indicating issues with RAM, graphics card, or other components. Not sure what it means? Bring it down to DRC’s.

Our Tip: Like a baby, those cries and coos mean something. Don’t ignore strange noises! Or maybe it’s 2045 and your sentient system is phoning home… Food for thought. 🙂

Tired of your programs freezing up when running multiple at a time? Could be a sign it’s time to upgrade your RAM.

3. How much RAM do I really need?

RAM (Random Access Memory) refers to memory cards used specifically for holding data temporarily so that it may be readily available to the user’s activity (e.g. open browser tabs, running programs or video games, etc.). The amount of RAM you need depends heavily on how you use your computer.

  • 4GB: I’m so sorry to you and your computer, but in 2025, this is a bad joke waiting to bomb. Heck, if it can even launch.
  • 8GB: Now we’re being a little more reasonable. Will do for casual PC use such as web browsing. That being said, Windows 11 is very resource hungry, might as well call it ‘Windows 11GB or more.’ Badum tss. o__o
  • 16GB: Ideal for heavy multitasking, graphic design, video editing, and not too bad for casual gaming.
  • 32GB+: Professionals in highly demanding fields (e.g., 3D rendering, complex data analysis) will benefit from this much RAM. And of course, gamers and ‘PC master race’ gang, check in here please.

Our Tip: More RAM allows your computer to handle more tasks simultaneously without slowing down. If you’re constantly running many tabs, multiple applications, or creative software, consider an upgrade.

2. Do I really need an antivirus program?

Well your prescribed antibiotics won’t work here. So yes, absolutely. And if you refuse, no you’re not getting my Wi-Fi password; I keep my side of the street clean. While modern operating systems like Windows or macOS have built-in security features, they are not a complete solution. Think of them as a basic lock on your front door—they’ll deter a casual thief, but a determined one will find a way in.

  • Comprehensive Protection: A dedicated antivirus suite offers more robust protection, including real-time scanning, firewall management, and protection against a wider range of threats like ransomware, spyware, and phishing attempts.
  • Performance Impact: Many believe antivirus programs slow down their computer. However, modern, reputable antivirus software is designed to be lightweight and efficient, with minimal impact on performance. The slowdown from a virus is far worse than any caused by an antivirus program!
  • Proactive Defense: Antivirus programs constantly update their threat databases to protect you from the newest forms of malware, something your built-in security isn’t guaranteed to do as quickly or comprehensively.

Our Tip: A good antivirus program is a non-negotiable part of your computer’s security and performance. It’s a small investment that can save you from a major data disaster or a costly repair. 1. Why is my computer suddenly so slow?

This is hands down the most common question we get, and there’s rarely one simple answer. A sudden slowdown can be attributed to several factors:

  • Too many programs running at startup: Many applications automatically launch when you turn on your computer, consuming valuable resources before you even open anything. Need help disabling/uninstalling unnecessary programs? We’d be happy to help you with that.
  • Lack of RAM (Random Access Memory): If your computer doesn’t have enough RAM, it struggles to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, leading to noticeable lag. Check question number 3 for more details.
  • Hard drive issues: Does your PC suddenly sound like it’s beatboxing? That may be a sign that it’s time to replace your hard drive. A nearly full hard drive, a fragmented drive (especially with older HDDs), or a failing drive can drastically impact performance. If this happens to be the case, backup your data as soon as possible!
  • Malware or viruses: Malicious software often runs in the background, hogging processing power and memory, slowing everything down. Have you ever let a random support technician control your PC remotely? Maybe they weren’t being so honest about their “helpful” intentions. Maybe they left behind programs that track your activity. May include ones that track your keystrokes to gather your passwords/personal information. If you have any questions or concerns, pop into our store or give us a call at 610-502-0854.
  • Outdated drivers or operating system: Keeping your system and device drivers updated ensures optimal performance and compatibility.
  • Outdated system: The end all be all, end of the road, the day we dread most for our devices, bad news answer; your PC is either slowing down in their sundown years or its aged software is no longer keeping up to modern demands/standards. It may be time to retire your old gold pal.

Our Tip: Check your startup programs, monitor your Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) to see what’s consuming resources, and always keep your antivirus software up-to-date.
